What is the difference between Google AI Mode and AI Overviews?

Updated 2026-11-06 · kagentx

Short answer

AI Overviews are a summary block on the results page; AI Mode is a separate search mode where you can keep asking follow-ups, and it finds links with query fan-out (several related searches at once). Google says neither has additional site requirements: the page just needs to be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet. Traffic is folded into the "Web" type in Search Console.

Are AI Mode and AI Overviews the same thing?

No. Google's 2025-03-05 blog post describes AI Mode as an experiment that adds more advanced reasoning, thinking and multimodal capabilities on top of AI Overviews. AI Overviews are a summary block on the results page; AI Mode is a separate search mode that users enter and can keep asking follow-ups in. On 2025-05-20 Google announced AI Mode was rolling out to all users in the US, with no Labs sign-up needed.

What does this mean for an independent site's traffic?

The official statement is short: neither has additional requirements or needs special optimization; a page must first be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet to become a supporting link. So the first job is the basics of traditional search; setup is in How do you get a new website indexed by Google? How many indexing requests can you send a day?.

In Search Console, AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic is folded into the Performance report under the "Web" search type; the official page does not say they are shown separately. So you cannot see "clicks from AI Mode" on their own; we only quote the official text and do not speculate.

Whether clicks fall is a separate question; the studies and our own data are in After AI Overviews appear, how many clicks do you lose? What can a small site do?. The concrete steps for AI Overviews are in How do I appear in Google's AI Overviews?.
