How do you get a new website indexed by Google? How many indexing requests can you send a day?

Updated 2026-11-05 · kagentx

Short answer

Getting a new site indexed takes three things: verify the property in Search Console, submit sitemap.xml, and manually click "Request indexing" for only the few most important pages. Manual requests have a quota that Google gives no number for; our own three sites hit it three days in a row (2026-11-03, 04, 05): about a dozen in total brings "quota exceeded", and it resets at 16:00 Beijing time (midnight Pacific). The rest relies on sitemap lastmod and IndexNow (which notifies Bing and others, not Google).

How do you get a new website indexed by Google?

Google has no "submit your site" form. The way is to tell it, in Search Console, where your URLs are and which matter most. This is what we do on our three sites:

  1. 1. Add the property and verify it

We use a "domain" property (for example mochistamp.com is sc-domain:mochistamp.com). Only after it is verified can you see indexing and search data.

  2. 2. Submit sitemap.xml

Google's documentation says that when you have many URLs, submitting a sitemap suits better than requesting them one by one, and it also helps Google discover URLs after a new site launches. How to write lastmod: see how to write a trustworthy sitemap lastmod.

  3. 3. Check one page with URL inspection

Enter a URL to see whether it is indexed and when it was last crawled. If it is not indexed, then decide whether to request it manually.

  4. 4. Click "Request indexing" only for the few most important pages

This button has a quota; the next section has our measurements. Send the pages that target your highest-impression queries first and leave the rest to the sitemap.

  5. 5. Do not request the same URL over and over

Google's documentation states that requesting the same URL several times does not get it crawled faster. Crawling usually takes a few days to a few weeks.

  6. 6. Check manual actions

Under "Security & Manual Actions", confirm there is no penalty. On 2026-11-05 all three of our sites showed "No issues detected".

How many indexing requests can you send a day? We hit the quota three days in a row

Google's "ask Google to recrawl" documentation (viewed 2026-11-05) only says there is a quota for submitting individual URLs and gives no number. Here is the actual record of our own three sites (mochistamp.com, gammaslide.com, kagentx.com) from 2026-11-03 to 05:

DateWhat happened
2026-11-0318 new URLs; across the three properties the 13th submission brought "quota exceeded"; 10 went through, 8 did not
2026-11-047 more to send, hit the quota again; after 16:00 Beijing time, 11 went through that evening
2026-11-05The very first URL tried brought "quota exceeded"; the previous evening had used it up

So the measured limit is a dozen or so a day. That the message came only at the 13th submission across three properties suggests the quota is shared by account rather than counted per property, but that is our inference from the counts; Google's documentation does not say so.

The quota resets at midnight Pacific time; our record says 16:00 Beijing time (Pacific Standard Time, UTC-8), and by conversion it is one hour earlier, 15:00, during daylight saving time. The 11-05 case shows it: what was sent the previous evening is still the same day in Pacific time, so it was still full the next morning in Beijing.

One operational trap: after you close the dialog, wait 2 seconds before the next action. On 11-03, clicking the search box right after closing the dialog did not open the new URL, so the same page was submitted two extra times and the quota was wasted.

How do sitemap lastmod and IndexNow divide the work?

Manual requests suit only a few key pages; the rest relies on two automatic methods. They cover different things:

MethodWho it notifiesWhat it coversHow it is triggered
Request indexingGoogleOne URL, queued for recrawl right awayManual, a dozen or so a day
sitemap with lastmodGoogle, Bing and othersThe whole site: the crawler decides which pages changed when it next visitsAutomatic, written in sitemap.xml
IndexNowBing, Yandex and other participating engines; Google is not in the documentationActively notifies when a page is added, changed or deletedPushed automatically after a deploy

MochiStamp's way: after a deploy that changes pages, it pushes IndexNow automatically (one push on 2026-11-04 sent 198 URLs and returned 200); sitemap lastmod changes only when page content really changes; for Google it relies on the sitemap and then manually sends the few most important pages. Details: how to write a trustworthy sitemap lastmod and what IndexNow is; the Bing side: How to set up Bing Webmaster Tools.

Which pages are worth submitting manually?

  1. 1. Look in URL inspection first

On 11-04, when we checked our to-send list, 7 of the pages were already indexed and needed no request. Look first, then submit; do not send everything on a hunch.

  2. 2. Prefer pages for the highest-impression queries

Use the scoreboard or the Performance report in Search Console to find the pages behind the queries with many impressions.

  3. 3. Leave what you cannot finish today until after the reset

After the quota resets, send the next ones; leave the rest to the sitemap.

FAQ

How many URLs a day can you send with Search Console's Request indexing?

Google's documentation says only that there is a quota and gives no number. Across our three sites, "quota exceeded" appeared at the 13th submission on 2026-11-03 and again on 11-04 and 11-05, so the measured limit is a dozen or so a day.

When does the quota reset?

At midnight Pacific time. Our record says 16:00 Beijing time (Pacific Standard Time); during daylight saving time the conversion gives 15:00.

Does requesting the same URL several times make it faster?

No. Google's documentation states that repeat requests do not make crawling faster. On 11-03 a slip made us submit one page two extra times and wasted quota.

You have too many URLs to send. What now?

Submit sitemap.xml and update lastmod only when content really changes; keep manual requests for the few most important pages. Google's documentation also suggests a sitemap when you have many URLs.

Can IndexNow notify Google?

No. Google is not among the participating engines listed in the IndexNow documentation; it notifies Bing and others. For Google you rely on the sitemap and Search Console.
