How do I appear in Google's AI Overviews?

Updated 2026-11-04 · kagentx

Short answer

Google's official position: there are no additional requirements and no special optimizations needed to appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode. The page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet; nosnippet and max-snippet limit what is shown. So five things to do: confirm it is indexed, allow Googlebot with no noindex, keep snippets on, serve real text in the HTML, and write for the subquestions. Check the data in Search Console under the Web search type.

What does Google officially require?

Google Search Central's documentation (checked 2026-11-04) is blunt: there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode, and no special optimizations are needed. The usual fundamentals apply: meet the technical requirements for Search, follow Search policies, and create helpful, people-first content.

For a specific page: to be a supporting link in an AI answer, the page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet. The documentation also notes that meeting these requirements does not guarantee crawling, indexing, or serving.

What Google's documentation saysWhat it means for you
No additional requirements and no other special optimizationsThere is no "AI Overviews only" setting. Get ordinary search right first
The page is indexed and eligible to show with a snippetA page that is noindex or nosnippet will not be picked as a link
No new machine-readable files, AI text files, or markup neededNo need to write an llms.txt or add special structured data just for this
May use "query fan-out": several related searches across subtopicsThe subquestions behind one question each deserve a page that answers them
AI Overviews appear only when they add value to SearchMany queries never trigger one, so not showing up is not necessarily your fault

How do I check whether my page qualifies?

  1. 1. Confirm the page is indexed

Paste the page URL into the search bar at the top of Search Console to open URL Inspection, and check whether it says the URL is on Google. If it is not indexed, read the reason it gives (noindex, blocked by robots.txt, duplicate, discovered but not indexed, and so on) and fix that first.

If you do not have Search Console yet, add your site as a property there first, then come back to this step.

  2. 2. Confirm Googlebot can crawl it and there is no noindex

Do not block Googlebot in robots.txt. The page must not send noindex: check the meta robots tag in the HTML and the X-Robots-Tag in the response headers. Enter your URL in the AI crawler check to see whether robots.txt allows Googlebot.

    User-agent: Googlebot
    Allow: /
  3. 3. Confirm snippets are not switched off

Google's documentation says nosnippet, data-nosnippet, and max-snippet all limit what Search can show from your page. Unless you have a reason, do not add nosnippet, and do not set max-snippet to a tiny number. To allow any length, you can write:

    <meta name="robots" content="max-snippet:-1">

After changing it, use URL Inspection to confirm Google sees the new markup, then wait for a recrawl or request reindexing.

  4. 4. Confirm the body text is real text in the HTML

Run the line below in a terminal, replacing the quoted text with a sentence from the page. If it prints 0, the body text only appears after scripts run. Google's documentation recommends text-based content so the page can be crawled.

    curl -s https://your-site.com/page/ | grep -c "a sentence from the page"
  5. 5. Write for the subquestions, and keep page text and structured data consistent

Google says AI Overviews may expand one question into several subtopic searches. So list the subquestions a buyer asks around one topic, then check that each has a page answering it: the heading is the question, the first paragraph gives the answer, and steps, comparisons, and prices follow.

Structured data is not required, but the documentation recommends keeping it consistent with the visible text. Prices, update dates, and authors should match between the page and the markup.

How do I see AI Overviews data in Search Console?

Google's documentation says traffic from AI features is counted in the Search Console Performance report under the Web search type, with no separate report. It does not say you can filter AI Overviews out on their own.

  • Open the Performance report, set the search type to Web, add the Page or Query dimension, and compare impressions and clicks for the pages you wrote around the subquestions.
  • To know whether a query shows an AI Overview, search it yourself on Google and check whether one appears and whether your link is in it. AI Overviews only appear when they add value, so the same query will not always show one.
  • Check several different questions at different times and record them in a table. Compare how many times you appear, not a single result.

If Google can crawl my page, will it appear in the answer?

No. Being crawlable and indexed is only the starting point. Both sites kagentx has evaluated passed the crawl check: 30 requests (the homepage and 2 inner pages, 10 identities) all returned 200, the same as Googlebot. But when we put buyer questions to an AI (Claude Sonnet 5.5, with web search on), GammaSlide was mentioned 0/21 times and MochiStamp 0/3 times.

Those two runs did not ask Google's AI Overviews, so they only show that "can be crawled" and "gets recommended" are different things. Whether a page is picked as a link also depends on whether it answers the question. For a fuller checklist, see the AI visibility audit checklist.

FAQ

Do I need structured data or an llms.txt for AI Overviews?

No. Google's documentation says you do not need to create new machine-readable files, AI text files, or markup for these features, and it does not require any specific schema.org structured data.

How do I stop my page appearing in AI Overviews?

Use nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet, or noindex to limit what is shown. Note that noindex removes the whole page from search. After adding a control, use URL Inspection to confirm Google sees the new version, and allow time for a recrawl.

Can I see AI Overviews clicks on their own in Search Console?

Google's documentation only says data from AI features is counted in the Performance report under the Web search type; it does not say you can filter it out separately. So you can only watch overall changes for the relevant pages and queries, and cross-check by searching manually.

If I do all this, will I definitely be picked as a link?

No. The documentation states that meeting the requirements does not guarantee crawling, indexing, or serving, and AI Overviews appear only when they add value to Search. All you can guarantee is that your own settings are not in the way.

Does blocking Google-Extended affect how I show up in Search?

Google's documentation puts Google-Extended under AI training and grounding in other Google systems; how Search crawls is controlled by the robots.txt rules for Googlebot. To appear in search results, Googlebot is what matters.

Do AI answers
mention you?

An evaluation asks ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude your buyers' questions (with web search on) and records who they recommend, which pages they cite and whether you are among them. Basic $1, results usually in 2–3 minutes.
