Are YouTube videos cited in AI answers?

Updated 2026-11-06 · kagentx

Short answer

Yes. Several third-party studies say YouTube is among the most-cited domains in Google AI Overviews, at roughly 20% to 30%, but we found no original reports, so this is not a conclusion. Google's official documentation does not mention video; it only requires that the page be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet, with no additional requirements. For video pages: aim the title at one question, answer in the first two lines of the description and link to the text version, add chapter timestamps, and upload accurate captions. No official source says AI reads captions; that is inference.

Are YouTube videos cited in Google AI Overviews and other AI answers?

Yes, and several third-party studies say YouTube is among the most-cited domains in AI Overviews, but the shares differ and we found no original report from any of them, so treat the numbers as a direction only. Google's own documentation does not mention video; it states only the general condition: the page is indexed and can appear in Search with a snippet.

These numbers do not corroborate one another, and they do not show whether they count "citing the video" or "citing the text on the video's page". Our conclusion goes only this far: video pages do appear among the sources of AI answers, but no data lets us say whether shooting video specifically for AI is worth it. The last column, "unverified", is our evidence status.

How should a video page's title and description be written so AI can understand it?

Give each video its own title and description, and answer the title's question directly at the start. Google's video SEO documentation asks that each watch page's title and description be unique to that video (checked 2026-11-06). AI cannot see what is said in the footage; the readable text is mainly the title, description and captions. That is our inference: no official documentation says AI products read YouTube captions.

  1. 1. Write the title as a question users ask or a task they want done

Aim at one query, like an article title; do not write only the brand name and episode number.

  2. 2. Answer in the first two lines of the description and add a link to the text version

The first two lines are the easiest to lift; link to the matching page on your own site so people and crawlers who find the video can reach the text version.

  3. 3. Add chapter timestamps to the description

YouTube's rules: the first timestamp must be 00:00, at least three, in ascending order, each chapter at least 10 seconds. Timestamps you write take precedence over automatic chapters.

  4. 4. Upload accurate captions rather than relying only on automatic ones

Captions are the fullest text a video has. Proper nouns, product names and numbers are the easiest for automatic captions to mishear, so check them before publishing.

  5. 5. Write a page about the same thing on your own site

Link the video page and your own text page to each other. Your page has to be indexed to meet the condition Google states, so even if the video is not cited, the text page has a chance. See How to write content AI will quote.

What do chapters (key moments) do for search results?

Chapters cut a long video into titled segments, and search results can jump straight to the relevant one. Google's documentation says that timestamps and labels you write in the YouTube description are used first, in every language where Google Search is available; if you write none, Google tries to detect segments automatically, but the documentation does not say that YouTube videos always get them.

YouTube's help page describes the rules for chapters inside YouTube and does not mention Google Search or AI answers. Whether chapters directly raise the chance of being cited by AI is not stated officially, and we have not verified it; what is certain is that they make it easier for readers and search results to locate the answer.

What should you watch for when putting videos on your own site?

Give each video its own watch page, with a text introduction and key points on the page, and add VideoObject structured data. Google's documentation asks that the structured data stay consistent with the video and other metadata, and that each video's thumbnailUrl, name and description differ.

The body text should be output by the server directly, not appear only after a script renders it, as with any other page. The page must be indexable to meet the general condition for appearing in AI Overviews; see How to appear in Google AI Overviews.

One last reminder: even when cited, users may not click through; see Do AI Overviews mean fewer clicks. Video is another place where people can get to know you, and whether it is worth doing depends on your product, not on AI. Say who you are in the channel description too; see How to write an About page.

FAQ

Has Google officially said AI Overviews cite YouTube?

The AI features page we checked (2026-11-06) does not mention video; it says only that a page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet, with no additional requirements. The claim that YouTube is cited comes from third-party studies.

What share of AI Overviews citations is YouTube?

The third-party figures disagree: about 20.9% (Ahrefs Brand Radar, relayed) to 23.3% (Surfer SEO, relayed). We found no original reports; unverified.

How do I write video chapters?

Write timestamps in the YouTube description: the first must be 00:00, at least three, ascending, each chapter at least 10 seconds. YouTube's help page was checked on 2026-11-06.

Are automatic captions good enough?

There is no official statement. Automatic captions often mishear proper nouns and numbers, so we suggest uploading captions you have checked. This is practical advice.

Is it fine to make only video and write no text page?

You can, but the text page on your own site is the one indexable page you fully control. We suggest having both, linked to each other.

Can crawlers read your pages?
Let the evaluation tell you

The evaluation checks whether crawlers can get in and whether the text is served directly, then asks ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude (with web search on) your buyers' questions and sees whether you are mentioned. The Basic plan is $1, and results usually take 2–3 minutes.
