How long until a new page is indexed by Google and cited by ChatGPT?

Updated 2026-11-06 · kagentx

Short answer

The official docs give no exact time: Google says crawling takes a few days to a few weeks. On one real site, two batches of guide pages got their first search impression 1–8 days after release (the median across 13 URLs was 3 days), and the first click came after 2 days at the fastest and 16 at the slowest. ChatGPT visits can only be counted for the whole site; the first appeared 8 days after the first batch went live. The sample is one site, so treat the days as a reference only.

How long do the official docs say a new page takes to be indexed?

Google gives only a range: crawling can take "a few days to a few weeks", and asking again for the same URL does not make it faster. OpenAI has not published how long a new page takes to reach ChatGPT search; it only says robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to take effect. So the day counts below are not promises, they are one real site's record.

WhoWhat the docs sayWhat they do not say
Google crawling and indexingCrawling can take a few days to a few weeks; asking again for the same URL is not faster; submitting individual URLs has a quotaNo quota number, and no update date on the page
Google AI Overviews / AI ModeThe page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet; no additional technical requirementsNo chance or timing of being cited
OpenAI (ChatGPT search)OAI-SearchBot must be allowed to appear in search answers; robots.txt changes are reflected in about 24 hoursNo time for a new page to become searchable

The official sources are at the bottom of the page: the two Google pages were checked on 2026-11-06, the OpenAI page on 2026-11-05. None of these pages shows its own update date.

How long until a real site's new page gets its first impression?

MochiStamp, the LINE sticker site behind MochiStamp's LINE sticker size guide, published its guide pages in two batches. The dates below come from its release log (Japan time), Search Console page-level impressions and clicks, and GA4 landing-page sessions, read on 2026-11-06.

BatchRelease dateFirst impressionFirst clickFirst GA4 landing session
Batch 1: four guides in several languages, 13 URLs have had impressions2026-10-16Next day, 10-17; 13 URLs took 1–8 days, median 3 daysGuide index page on 10-18 (2 days); article page /guide/size on 11-01 (16 days)/guide/size on 10-27 (11 days)
Batch 2: WhatsApp and Telegram guides, 5 URLs2026-10-28Next day, 10-29; 5 URLs took 1–3 days, median 2 daysArabic WhatsApp page on 10-30 (2 days)English WhatsApp page on 10-29 (1 day)

How to read it: impressions come fast, clicks and real visits come slowly. The fastest page had an impression after 1 day and the slowest after 8. From first impression to first click, the shortest gap was 1 day and the longest more than two weeks.

How long until ChatGPT sends the first visitor?

This can only be counted for the whole site, not for a single page. MochiStamp's first chatgpt.com session was on 2026-10-24, 8 days after the first batch of guides went live and 4 days before the second. By 2026-11-05 there were 54 sessions on 11 of 24 days, with the peak on 11-03 at 13.

One fact worth noting side by side: the day after the second batch went live (10-29) there were 12 chatgpt.com sessions, against only 2 the day before. But the dashboard stores source and landing page separately, so we cannot confirm those 12 landed on the new pages. These are two numbers next to each other, not a cause.

When can't you copy these day counts?

  • One site, two batches of pages. The sample is small; a brand-new site may be much slower.
  • This site's sitemap carries real lastmod values, it pushes IndexNow after every deploy, and Bing and Google had already indexed its older pages. A new domain will be slower; we have no data on how much.
  • Only URLs that had impressions are counted. URLs without impressions are not in the list, so "1–8 days" does not mean "all pages".
  • Search Console data lags by 2–3 days, so the most recent days look low.

How can you get a new page discovered faster?

  1. 1. Put the new page in the sitemap with the real modification time as lastmod

See How do you write a trustworthy sitemap lastmod? for how. If lastmod changes every day, crawlers stop trusting it.

  2. 2. Request indexing in Search Console, once only

Google says repeating the request is not faster. The daily quota is limited, so submit the few pages you most want found first; details in How do you get a new website indexed by Google? How many indexing requests can you send a day?.

  3. 3. Notify Bing-style engines with IndexNow

IndexNow is only a notification and does not guarantee indexing; see What is IndexNow, and does it matter for AI search?.

  4. 4. Link to the new page from pages that are already indexed

Inference: crawlers reach known pages first and then discover new ones by following links. The official pages do not state this word for word, and we did not find the original text.

  5. 5. After one to two weeks, ask ChatGPT the same questions

First make sure OAI-SearchBot is not blocked; see How do I get ChatGPT to recommend my product?. Count how many times you appear across several asks rather than judging one answer.

FAQ

How long until a new page is indexed by Google?

Google says crawling can take a few days to a few weeks, and repeating the request for the same URL is not faster. On one real site, a new page's first search impression came 1–8 days after release.

How long until a new page is cited by ChatGPT?

OpenAI has not published this time. On one real site the first chatgpt.com session appeared 8 days after the guides went live, but it cannot be tied to a specific page.

Does requesting indexing several times make it faster?

No. Google states that repeating the request for the same URL is not faster, and submitting individual URLs has a quota.

Do you need to do anything extra to appear in Google AI Overviews?

Google says the page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet; there are no additional technical requirements.

Why do clicks come so late after the first impression?

An impression only means the page appeared in results. In this site's data the gap from first impression to first click was as short as 1 day and as long as more than two weeks. Ranking position probably matters; we did not analyse page by page.
