Does traffic from ChatGPT convert better than traffic from Google?

Updated 2026-11-06 · kagentx

Short answer

On one real site, sessions from ChatGPT were more willing to keep reading: from 2026-10-13 to 11-05, 74% of chatgpt.com's 54 sessions were engaged, against 46% of Google organic's 94. But sign-up rate cannot be computed because sign-ups are not split by source; the sample is one site and 24 days, so treat it as a lead only.

Are visitors from ChatGPT more willing to keep reading than visitors from Google?

On this one site, yes. In MochiStamp's (a LINE sticker site) GA4 data from 2026-10-13 to 2026-11-05, 74% of the 54 sessions from chatgpt.com were engaged sessions, against 46% of the 94 sessions from Google organic search and 20% of the 215 direct visits. The sample is small; the sections below say what can and cannot be compared.

Data is from GA4, read on 2026-11-06. The dashboard's per-source data only starts on 2026-10-13, so this is 24 days, not 28. The interval is a Wilson interval we computed from the sample size to show how small the sample is; GA4 does not provide it.

What does "engaged session" mean?

GA4's definition: a session counts as engaged if it meets any one of these: it lasts longer than 10 seconds, has a key event, or has 2 or more page or screen views. It is not the same as signing up or paying.

So "74% engaged" only says that most of these visitors did not leave after a glance. It is a signal of visitor quality, not a conversion rate.

What about sign-up rate: is ChatGPT's higher?

This site cannot compute it, so we do not state one. Over the same period the whole site had 15 sign-ups and GA4 recorded 9 sign_up events, but neither number is split by source in our dashboard, so we cannot say which sign-up came from ChatGPT and which from Google.

To work it out yourself: in GA4 Explore, use source / medium as the dimension and the sign_up event as the metric to get sign-ups by source. See How do you see ChatGPT traffic in GA4? for setup.

What can't this comparison conclude?

  • One site, 24 days, 54 chatgpt.com sessions. The interval is 23 percentage points wide.
  • The two kinds of visitors enter on different pages: we did not cross source with landing page, so we cannot rule out explanations such as "ChatGPT sends people to the more complete guide pages".
  • GammaSlide and kagentx had no chatgpt.com sessions over the same period, so there is no second site to compare with.
  • We did not find a reliable public large-sample study, so we do not cite claims like "ChatGPT traffic converts several times better than Google".

How do you compare on your own site?

  1. 1. First make sure ChatGPT traffic is recorded as its own source

GA4's default channel group has an AI Assistant channel, with chatgpt.com as the source. For the setup check see How do you see ChatGPT traffic in GA4?.

  2. 2. Take the same period and put three sources side by side

Sessions, engaged sessions and key events (sign-ups, pricing clicks). Use at least 4 weeks; with fewer than 100 sessions treat it as a lead only.

  3. 3. Then split by landing page

See which pages ChatGPT sessions land on. Those pages are the ones AI is citing, and worth deepening; see How do I get ChatGPT to recommend my product?.

  4. 4. Recompute every two weeks

For choosing metrics see How do you measure AI visibility? Four metrics and a table you can follow. Watch the trend, not a single day.

FAQ

Does ChatGPT traffic convert better than Google?

On the single site MochiStamp, 74% of chatgpt.com sessions were engaged against 46% for Google organic. Sign-ups are not split by source, so conversion rate cannot be compared.

How does GA4 define an engaged session?

Longer than 10 seconds, a key event, or 2 or more page or screen views; any one is enough.

Why no sign-up rate?

The whole site had 15 sign-ups in the period, but the dashboard does not split them by source. Inventing a ratio would mislead.

How big can ChatGPT traffic be?

Over 24 days on this site, chatgpt.com was 13% of all 402 sessions and 29% of the 140 engaged sessions. Other sites may differ: GammaSlide and kagentx had 0 over the same period.

How do I check this on my own site?

In GA4 take the same period and put source, sessions, engaged sessions and sign-up events side by side for at least 4 weeks; with a small sample treat it as a lead only.
